Central Bohemia has long been a popular destination for filmmakers and film lovers alike. The region’s diverse landscapes, historical landmarks, and strategic location make it an ideal backdrop for both Czech and international film productions. Filmmakers can find the perfect setting for any story here, while the presence of film crews also attracts film enthusiasts eager to visit locations made famous on the big and small screens.
Among the notable sites featured in films and TV series are the castles of Točník, Křivoklát, Kačina, and Žleby, as well as the picturesque natural landscapes of the Czech Karst, Kokořínsko, and the Beroun area. The region’s limestone formations, caves, and dense forests offer stunning backdrops for historical and adventure films, while open-air museums provide authentic settings for period dramas.
For the past five years, the Central Bohemia Film Office has been helping film crews with everything from coordinating with local authorities to finding the perfect filming locations. This year alone, the office has supported 17 major productions.
The presence of film productions also brings economic benefits to the region, boosting local businesses and drawing tourists. After a film’s release, the locations featured often see an increase in visitors, with interest continuing for years. A great example of this is Kingdom Come: Deliverance, a video game released six years ago that immerses players in the medieval landscapes of Central Bohemia. Fans of the game have been visiting the Sázava River region, the setting for much of the story, to see how the landscape and architecture have changed over time.
“In 2018, we published a special guide for tourists that follows the main character’s journey in *Kingdom Come: Deliverance*, highlighting key locations from the game and their transformation over the centuries. Not only game fans but anyone interested can trace the hero’s steps and experience these real-world settings,” said Jakub Kulhánek, Director of the Central Bohemia Tourist Board. Next year, the game’s sequel will focus on Kutná Hora, and the city is already preparing for an influx of fans.
